Amanda was classically trained in ballet and tap as a child and teen, and is very happy to be back on the dance floor. She loves doing aerials and dressing up in vintage clothing. She has been on staff for VBLX, DCBX, and DCBW.

Her goals are to claim a National Swing Dance title with her partner & husband, Jeff Miller (above). She continues to spread the exciting dance of swing to new students. Amanda loves teaching new students and seeing them blossom into great swing dancers. Amanda will keep dancing until her knees won't let her.

Chris Crawford
SVa Director/ Instructor
Chris Crawford came to us by way of the US Air Force in 2002, and has been gracing our dance floors ever since. As a Social dancer, Instructor, and Event Coordinator Chris has truly become a valued member of our community.

Chris's exploits in dance date back as far as his military career, (just over a decade). Over the past ten years he has not only had the opportunity to travel the globe serving his country, but has also had the opportunity to learn from the top Lindy Hoppers in the world, as well as sample differant regional flavors, while social dancing both throughout the US and abroad.

As an instructor Chris is very rooted in the fundamentals of Lindy Hop, seldomly breaking the rules, he believes that a solid foundation will allow you to build on your dance endlessly. His fun, and systematic aproach to teaching will have you up and dancing with the best of them.

Tony Allison
Instructor
Tony originally hails from Indiana, where he was a striving young music student, until the Navy brought him to the Virginia Beach area. He is currently serving the Navy.

He started dancing swing in the summer of 2005. Learning East Coast from Rick Hockman, then learning Lindy Hop from fantabulous Erika Phillips. And was hooked from the beginning. As his love for dance grew, he branched out to many different styles to include but not limited to Swing, Salsa, Cha-Cha, Mambo, Samba, Waltz, Hustle, and Rumba.

Always available for private lessons, group lessons, or as a dance partner.

Erika Phillips
Instructor
Erika learned to swing dance back during the days of the swing rival craze in Phoenix, AZ. (That was 10 years ago) She has been dancing ever since. Her life has taken her to San Diego, CA where she worked as a ballroom dance instructor for Arthur Murray and received her teaching certficate through the National Dance Council of America in June 2003.

While she was there she had the awesome chance to attend Swing Camp Catalina in 2002 and learn from under the great: Frankie Manning, Kevin and Carla, Steve and Virginnie. She then moved to Virginia where she has been teaching walk in, beginner friendly classes, series and speciality classes since July of 2005. Erika loves to teach and to dance with beginners because she remembers what it was like to be a beginner. Hell, she still feels like one herself. She belives dancing should be FUN. You'll usually find her off in a corner teaching at a dance because that is how she herself learned, out of the generosity and compassion of other dancers.

She belives in all that Swing Virginia is and does. Hands down Swing Virginia is the happiest, friendliest Lindy Hoppers that she has ever had the pleasure to dance or teach with from coast to coast. She feels very blessed to be here and be part of their team.

Beth Lacy
Instructor / DJ
Beth always liked to dance, but got hooked on swing when she went to a dance at JMU for class. Since Feb. 2005, she has been dancing, teaching, and organizing events for the JMU Swing Dance club. She moved here in May 2008 to start a career and keep dancing with the friendly people she met at VBLX and Dirt Cheap.

She travels as frequently as her job lets her to dances and workshops to learn more and dance with new people. Beth looks forward to teaching, DJing, and dancing here as a local!

Lee Fisher
Instructor

Lee Fisher started dancing "Be-Bob Rock N Roll" in the early 1950s. "Jive" is now most closely compared to "Be-bob" which is also derived from East Coast Swing, but Jive hails from Europe Dance studios of the 1970s. Jive is Europe's version of 6 count Swing and is considered a "ball-room" dance. Some simple acrobatics were mixed in with the Be-bob dance moves of the 50s. The music was Elvis, Little Richard, The Big Bopper, Jerry Lee Lewis and all the others of that time.

Kristin Fisher (daughter above) introduced Lee and his wife, Sally, to come out Swing Dancing the summer of 2006. East Coast Swing has been an easy dance to learn because of the similarities to the dances they used early in life.

Lee is now teaching Basic East Coast (6 count) as a way to "pay forward" those who spent time teaching him. The East Coast 6 count is very different than Be-Bop and the Jive. East Coast Swing is easily mixed with other swing dances which can make Swing more interesting and versatile to dance.

Jesse Niou
Instructor / DJ
Jesse Niou eats, sleeps, breathes, earns a living, etc. to dance. He's known for super-efficient dancing with fast & fancy, precise footwork, rock-solid connection, and creative musicality. Raised in Southern California, he has had the benefit of learning from some of the best dancers in the world and enough dancing to practice it all. He continually seeks out the masters to learn more about the dance he loves and passing it on to his fellow dancers. Jesse is trained in several types of swing dancing and numerous styles of each dance.

Jesse's teaching focuses heavily upon theory, basics, and connection, building a foundation that allows for greater expression of creativity and musicality in the dance as well as aiding the student in digesting complex moves and concepts more easily. In addition, he uses day to day analogies catered to each student that not only show how the mechanics of the dance work, how the connection should feel, and how the aesthetic should look. Jesse believes Lindy Hop to be an integral part of jazz music (and vice versa!), and therefore includes dance and jazz history in each lesson, stressing authenticity and traditional aesthetic.

Jesse has a vested interest in your development as a Lindy Hopper and will see you on the dance floor.

Kait Mahr
Instructor / DJ

Kait comes by the way of Knoxville, TN where she learned and developed a whole new style and passion for swing. She moves to Hampton Roads in 2008 and is already an asset for the team.

She is truly an inspiration to dance, but be ready for tons of smiles and laughter to make your dancing ever so much more than just steps.

Andrew Jaswa
Instructor / DJ

...although Andrew moved to Denver, CO but we owe him tons for making SVa a success!

Andrew came to the scene by the way of JMU back in 2005 and has jumped on board ever since. He brings out great ideas and is a marketing asset to keep our scene alive.

He also DJs and keeps our dancers on their toes with a great array of traditional and fun songs to keep dancers guessing as to what is next on his playlist.

He also started the area's forum
Are You Hep to The Jive?
This is a great avenue where we bring up several topics from local events, to national to some fun stuff going on in the area, or if you just want to chat about some cool moves you saw.
